Polynomial-time Construction of Contraction Hierarchies

چکیده
In this paper we consider a variant of the multi-criteria shortest path problem where the different criteria are combined in an arbitrary conic combination at query time. We show that contraction hierarchies (CH) a very powerful speedup technique originally developed for standard shortest path queries (Geisberger et al. 2008) can be adapted to this scenario and lead after moderate preprocessing effort to query times that are orders of magnitudes faster than standard shortest path approaches. On the theory side we prove via some polyhedral considerations that the crucial node contraction operation during the CH construction can be performed in polynomial-time, while on the more practical side we complement our theoretical results with experiments on real-world data. Our approach extends previous results (Geisberger, Kobitzsch, and Sanders 2010) which only considered the bicriteria case. This is an extended abstract of the full paper published in (Funke and Storandt 2013).

Polynomial-time construction of contraction hierarchies for multi-criteria objectives
We consider multicriteria shortest path problems and show that contraction hierarchies – a very powerful speed-up technique originally developed for standard shortest path queries in [7] – can be constructed efficiently for the case of arbitrary conic combinations of the edge costs. This extends previous results in [5] which considered only the bicriteria case and discrete weights for the objec...

متن کاملProvable Efficiency of Contraction Hierarchies with Randomized Preprocessing
We present a new way of analyzing Contraction Hierarchies (CH), a widely used speed-up technique for shortest path computations in road networks. In previous work, preprocessing and query times of deterministically constructed CH on road networks with n nodes were shown to be polynomial in n as well as the highway dimension h of the network and its diameter D. While h is conjectured to be polyl...
متن کاملSearch-Space Size in Contraction Hierarchies
This thesis is concerned with a so-called speedup technique for Dijkstra’s algorithm: Contraction hierarchies. We present a model of contraction hierachies sufficiently sophisticated to capture real-world applications but yet concise enough to lend itself to theoretical investigations. This model reveals an interrelation between contraction hierarchies and filled graphs that directly relates th...
متن کاملTime Dependent Contraction Hierarchies -- Basic Algorithmic Ideas
Contraction hierarchies are a simple hierarchical routing technique that has proved extremely efficient for static road networks. We explain how to generalize them to networks with time-dependent edge weights. This is the first hierarchical speedup technique for time-dependent routing that allows bidirectional query algorithms.
